Like everything to do with your business, having an online marketing plan is essential. You’ve got to understand how your message is going to get through the constant flow of online information that your potential customers are seeing every day.
We’ve put together four steps that will help with brainstorming your online marketing plan. By dedicating a few hours each week to the process, it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3 (4…).
1) Send Monthly Emails to Your List
Email sometimes feels like the old-fashioned way to communicate, but it remains one of the most effective ways to market your business. Create a consistent (but not overwhelming) schedule for sending email updates to your list. In each email, remember to include something valuable for your readers – it shouldn’t always be just a promotional message.
- Consistency is king. To start out, one monthly email gives you time to build quality content. It’s also not overwhelming for your readers.
- It’s not necessary to place all the content in the email. Link to your website to access certain blog posts or to finish longer blogs/articles. This gets your customers on to your site and hopefully navigating around.
- If possible, include the recipient’s name in the email. This personalizes the communication and in a small way helps to build your relationship. All major email providers allow you to do this (We recommend Mailchimp).
- Try experimenting with different subject lines in order to improve your open rate. Your analytics will tell you when you find the magic formula that works for you.
2. Publish New Blog Posts Regularly
Your content is what keeps people coming back to your site and your blog is the best place to highlight that content.
Creating a collection of high-quality, useful content for your blog will grow your visibility in search engines, create a catalogue of articles you’ll be able to point your customers to when they need more information about something, and the content will showcase your expertise within your field.
- Publishing one new blog post per month. At a minimum.
- Using great images and amazing photos will make your content more engaging.
- Focusing on “evergreen content” that will remain relevant and useful to your customers.
3. Be Active on Social Media
While some people use social media to update the world about what they’ve just eaten or their micro-schedule for the next hour, you should be using it to engage with your audience.
The best and fastest way to connect with your audience and grow a strong following is to post content that is useful and valuable to them. Asking questions and contributing to the conversation shows you care.
- Posting updates several times each week.
- Because images perform better than text alone, use images to increase reach and engagement.
- Using hashtags will target specific audiences and improve your reach
- Scheduling your posts by using a social media management tool. Edgar and Buffer are great options, we use both.
4. Provide Value to Your Customers
Put yourself in your clients place and try to think about what they want to read. When you share your content, remember to provide value to them.
It’s nice to talk about yourself and how your business is doing, but engaging, useful, and visual content that your clients are genuinely interested in will bring the best results.
- If you don’t know what exactly to share, we suggest taking a look at what your competition is doing as well as others across your industry in order to get a sense of what works for them.
- If there’s a company or organization that you aspire to, study their online marketing and convert it to your needs.
These four tips are a good start for online marketing newbies. You’ll see consistent growth when you become consistent in your efforts. It just takes a few hours each week to make a different.
